Description
Barrow Borough Council in conjunction with Westlake Urban Regeneration Company appointed ABP Mer and JYA Ltd to undertake the development of a strategic flood risk assessment for the borough.
The area covered by Barrow Borough Council is on the Furness Peninsula on the Cumbrian coast of the UK. The borough has a number of potential rural and urban flooding problems. In particular, Barrow in Furness is at risk of both tidal inundation and fluvial flooding with over 1,800 properties identified as being vulnerable and within the EA's high flood risk mapping area.
Barrow in Furness is currently undergoing significant development to raise the profile of the town. This includes the construction of a cruise liner terminal, waterside business park and a new marina village. All of these facilities are close to the Walney Channel and the EA mapping suggests that they were vulnerable to tidal inundation.
The SFRA was divided into two phases. Phase 1 included collating data, identifying flooding problems and developing a strategy for the future. The consultations and work undertaken for Phase 1 identified four key issues relating to flooding in Barrow-in-Furness which were of critical imporatance.
Fortunately these issues has a high degree of overlap and the scope of Phase 2 was designed to address each one in parallel.
