The breach has led to a significant alteration in the alignment of the River Monnow and erosion threatens to affect the highway bridge downstream of the weir.
The weir is directly adjacent to the village and the historic Norman castle which has a history of regular flooding. Residents of the village were particularly concerned with the impact of the weir on flooding. The mill at Skenfrith also dates back to the 15th Centuary and historic context of the weir is important.
